Project Summary

A full rebuild of a two-platform regional station, including a replacement footbridge with lifts, a new ticket hall and platform resurfacing across 1,300 feet.

Overview and challenge

The footbridge was the whole job in miniature. It weighs 74 tons, it crosses electrified track, and it could only be placed during an isolation. Two isolations were available, four weeks apart.

We built the bridge in a compound beside the station, load-tested it on temporary bearings, and lifted it in two sections. The second isolation was held as contingency and in the end was used for cable diversions instead.

Solution and results

Both lifts completed inside their windows. The station stayed open throughout with a temporary barrow crossing under supervision, and passenger numbers rose 9% in the first year after reopening.
