Project Summary

A 48,000 square foot support center providing outpatient facilities, family accommodation and administration, built on the last available plot on a constrained hospital campus.

Overview and challenge

The nearest ward window was forty feet from our hoarding. Vibration, noise and dust were all constrained, and the constraints moved with the clinical schedule — a quiet requirement in one wing on Tuesday might be somewhere else entirely by Thursday.

We seconded a full-time liaison whose only job was talking to ward managers. Every week’s plan was walked with them before it was issued.

Solution and results

Piling was replaced with a vibro-displacement solution after trial results showed conventional driving exceeded the agreed vibration threshold at the ward facade. It cost more and removed the risk entirely.

Over fourteen months the Trust lost no clinical sessions to the works. Three noise complaints were raised and all three were resolved within the day.
